Easy-to-Follow Instructions:
Using SEM 39477 is straightforward for DIYers with basic tools. Always work in a well-ventilated area, wear gloves, eye protection, and a mask. Test compatibility on a small area first. Vehicle should be at least 70°F (21°C) for one hour before application. Note: Do not use over acid-based self-etching primers, as it may cause cracking or blistering.
1. Surface Preparation (15-30 minutes)
- Clean the seams, joints, or voids thoroughly with a cleaner like SEM Solve or XXX Universal Surface Cleaner to remove dirt, grease, and old sealant.
- For primed surfaces: Sand with P400 grit sandpaper or scuff with a gray scuff pad.
- For bare metal: Sand with P80 grit sandpaper to create a rough surface for better adhesion.
- Blow off dust with compressed air and wipe with a tack cloth to remove lint.
- Re-clean the area with your chosen cleaner and let it dry completely.
-
Pro Tip: If the area might flex (e.g., roof skins), apply a two-component urethane or epoxy primer first (like SEM World Class DTM Primer) and let it fully cure before sealing. When in doubt, prime!
2. Mixing (5 minutes)
- You'll need a manual or pneumatic applicator gun (like SEM 71119 or 70039) and a static mixer (SEM 70011 or 70012).
- Insert the 7 oz cartridge into the applicator.
- Remove the cap by prying it up with a flathead screwdriver.
- Equalize the cartridge: Squeeze out a small amount until both components (Part A and B) flow evenly.
- Attach the static mixer to the cartridge end.
- Cut the mixer tip to your desired bead size (e.g., smaller for tight seams, larger for broader areas).
- Hold the applicator upright and dispense until product flows into the mixer. Squeeze out a test bead on scrap material to confirm even mixing – it should be uniform beige without streaks.
3. Application (10-15 minutes working time)
- Apply the sealer directly into the seam or joint using steady pressure on the applicator.
- Work it in or smooth it out with a gloved finger, putty knife, or plastic spreader for a clean finish.
- For a sprayed texture (optional): Use the SEM Quick Spray System (70100) with Versa-Tips (70070) attached to the mixer. Adjust air pressure on your pneumatic applicator for the desired OEM-like pattern.
- While still wet, wipe away any excess with a small amount of VOC-compliant solvent (check local regs).
- Let it set for 15 minutes at 70°F before handling.
4. Painting and Finishing
- Paint immediately with most solvent-based coatings, or wait 15 minutes for waterborne ones.
- If waiting longer than 24 hours to paint, lightly scuff with a gray pad first.
- Full cure takes 1 hour at 70°F – avoid heavy use until then.
Clean Up and Storage
- While wet, clean tools and excess with a compliant solvent.
- Store unused cartridge in a cool, dry place away from heat or flames – shelf life is 2 years.
- Dispose of waste per local regulations.
