DIY Application Instructions (Technical Guidelines for Best Results):
Safety First: Always work in a well-ventilated area or spray booth. Wear appropriate PPE: respirator (organic vapor cartridge), safety goggles, gloves, and protective clothing. Clear coat contains isocyanates – do not breathe vapors or spray mist.
Surface Preparation:
- Ensure your basecoat (color coat) is fully dry to touch and cured per the basecoat manufacturer's instructions (typically 20-60 minutes flash time).
- Wipe the surface with a high-quality tack cloth to remove dust, lint, or contaminants. Avoid touching the surface with bare hands.
- Surface should be clean, smooth, and free of silicone, wax, grease, or oils.
Mixing (2:1 Ratio – No Reducer Typically Needed):
- Ratio: 2 parts Clear Coat : 1 part Hardener (by volume). Example: For a manageable batch, mix 200 ml clear + 100 ml hardener (total 300 ml mixed).
- Use graduated mixing cups for accuracy (ratio lines make it easy).
- Stir thoroughly for 1-2 minutes until fully blended – do not shake (introduces air bubbles).
- Pot life: Use mixed material within 2-4 hours (depending on temperature).
- No reducer/thinner is usually required, but if needed for better flow in hot conditions, add up to 5-10% urethane reducer (test first).
Application (HVLP Spray Gun Recommended):
- Gun setup: 1.3-1.4 mm tip, 25-30 PSI at the gun (adjust per your gun specs).
- Apply 2-3 medium-wet coats.
- First coat: Medium coverage (seal coat). Flash 10-15 minutes.
- Second coat: Fuller wet coat. Flash 10-15 minutes.
- Third coat (optional): For extra depth/build – apply wet-on-wet.
- Maintain a 50-75% overlap on each pass.
- Avoid heavy runs or sags – better to build in thin layers.
- Temperature range: Ideal 65-80°F (18-27°C). Adjust hardener if needed for faster/slower cure in extreme temps.
Drying & Curing:
- Dust-free: 15-30 minutes
- Tape-free: 1-2 hours
- Buff/polish: 24-48 hours air dry (or sooner with heat/IR lamp per instructions).
- Full cure: 7 days for maximum hardness.
Buffing & Polishing: For ultimate gloss, compound and polish after full cure. Use a dual-action polisher with cutting compound, then swirl remover, and finish with wax/sealant.
This kit gives professional-grade results when applied with care – many DIYers achieve amazing finishes with patience and proper prep!
